2023 We are all indigenous scientists!

In Taiwan, August 1 is Indigenous Peoples’ Day. In August of this year, the National Museum of Natural Science launched a series of activities under the title “We Are All Indigenous Scientists: Science and Indigenous Education for All” to promote awareness of indigenous science and pay tribute to indigenous peoples. They included two micro-exhibitions, which opened on August 1: mita kwara Genzyuminzok: Indigenous Peoples at NMNS Retrospective and ke’ na 'Tayal Speaking Indigenous Languages: Naming of Animals, Plants, and Minerals.

The mita kwara Genzyuminzok: Indigenous Peoples at NMNS Retrospective provided an overview of past special exhibitions of this museum that had been jointly organized with indigenous peoples. It served to recognize the important contributions of indigenous peoples to Taiwan’s society.

In the ke’ na 'Tayal Speaking Indigenous Languages: Naming of Animals, Plants, and Minerals exhibition, the indigenous names of Taiwan’s endemic animals, plants, and minerals were introduced. With participation from researchers in this museum, animals, plants, and minerals “spoke indigenous languages.”
